A Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) can stop heartburn before it starts by shutting off the cells that “pump” acid into the stomach. Relief can last for 24 hours. Acid controllers, or H2 Blockers, “block” signals that tell your stomach to produce acid. Relief can start in as little as 30 minutes, but benefits may only last for 12 hours. Antacids can neutralize, but not reduce, the stomach acid that causes heartburn. Relief can be immediate, but it may only last for 1-3 hours.
